Getting Started
The Ultimate Piano is your piano practice partner — not a course that decides what you play next. Getting started is whatever you sit down to today: play freely, or bring your own MIDI file, audio track, YouTube tutorial or sheet music and slow the one bar that keeps tripping you up. Drill scales, chords and note reading, train your ear, look up a voicing you half remember, keep time to a real drum groove.
The Ultimate Piano uses the Web MIDI API to communicate with external MIDI keyboards directly in the browser, so you can connect real hardware without any extra software or drivers. For the short overview of the online MIDI piano and everything it covers, start on the home page.

Getting Started in Three Steps
Getting started needs just three steps and no account:
1. Open the app at app.the-ultimate-piano.com — the piano loads automatically.
2. Click a key to start playing — the sound engine starts on your first interaction.
3. Connect a MIDI keyboard (optional) to play with real hardware.
The interface is available in 4 languages — English, German, Spanish, and French.
Open the App
1. Visit app.the-ultimate-piano.com
2. The piano loads automatically – you can start playing right away
Tip: If you don't hear any sound, click a key on the keyboard — browsers require one interaction before playing audio.
Connect Your MIDI Keyboard
A MIDI keyboard gives you the best experience, and connecting one takes 3 steps. MIDI input is off by default, so you enable it once in Settings:
1. Connect your MIDI keyboard to your computer
2. Open Settings → MIDI and turn on MIDI on/off
3. Check the box next to your device in the list — a green dot shows it is connected — close Settings and start playing
Note: MIDI keyboard support works in Chrome, Edge, and Opera; Firefox asks for permission the first time. Safari does not support Web MIDI on either macOS or iOS/iPadOS — on iPad and Mac, the free MIDIWeb Browser passes your keyboard through to the web instead (our thanks to 5of12 for building it). For device status, the Refresh button and the Audio & MIDI Check, see Settings → MIDI.
Explore the Virtual Piano
Here's the best way to discover what The Ultimate Piano can do:
1. Try Learning Mode
Click Learn → Chords & Scales in the header to explore chords and scales visually. Select from 14 scale types or 30 chord qualities and see the notes highlighted on the keyboard, complete with roman-numeral analysis. This is great for understanding music theory in a hands-on way. The same menu opens the Chord Explorer, Passing Chords and the Circle of Fifths.
See Learning Mode for all options including chord types, scale modes, and the Chord Explorer.
2. Load a Song
Click Song Player in the header and pick one of five players:
- MIDI Player – Load a MIDI file (.mid, .midi) to see falling notes cascade toward the keyboard; adjust playback across 30–300 BPM
- Audio Player – Load an MP3 to practice with waveform display, looping, and speed control from 25% to 200% without changing pitch
- Video Player – Paste a YouTube tutorial link or load your own video file and play along with the video above the keyboard
- Sheet Music Player – Open a MusicXML score, follow along, practice each hand and get your playing scored
- PDF Score Reader – Read PDF sheet music, turn pages hands-free with a foot pedal, auto-scroll in tempo and mark up the page
See Practicing Songs for a complete practice workflow.
3. Practice Actively
Click Practice → Notes & much More to open the Practice Hub with interactive exercises:
- Chords – Learn chord shapes with visual feedback
- Scales – Practice scales with guided note sequences
- Arpeggios – Practice arpeggio patterns with guided note sequences
- Notes – Train note recognition across the keyboard
- Progressions – Practice chord progressions in any key
- Ear Training – its own card in the Practice menu: test your ear with intervals, chords, and scales
4. Create Visual Content
Click Create in the header to access visual tools:
- Piano Diagram Maker (Keyboard Capture in the menu) – Capture keyboard screenshots with highlighted keys, note names, and fingerings
- Progression Generator – Build chord progression charts for teaching materials and music books, and play them back with a metronome
- Leadsheet Editor – Write lead sheets with chords and lyrics, and export them
5. Use the Metronome
Click the Metronome button in the header for a professional metronome covering 20–400 BPM, with a visual beat display, time signatures (4/4, 3/4, 6/8, and more), subdivisions, and speed training.
6. Record Your Playing on the MIDI Keyboard
Click the red Record button to capture your playing — whether from your MIDI keyboard, mouse, or touch — as a MIDI file, up to 30 minutes long. The file downloads automatically, and you can play it back in the MIDI Player.
For Kids
Turn on Show kids icons in Settings → Display → Keys to show fun animal characters on the keys — alongside note names, perfect for young beginners.
7. View as Sheet Music
The Score display shows your playing as real-time music notation and names the chord you play; it is on by default. The View menu in its top right corner switches between score and chord, score only, or chord only, and Settings sets its position (above, below, left, or right of the keyboard).
